On Monday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the British monarch King Charles III at Windsor Castle, UK.

The two men reportedly discussed a number of issues, including environmentalism and possible restoration plans for the former royal estate at Tatoi in north Athens.

Mitsotakis has a busy schedule during his visit to the United Kingdom, which includes several meetings and promoting British-Greek business interests in London.

Discussion

On Monday evening, King Charles greeted Mitsotakis and his wife, Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotaki, at Windsor Castle. The official website of the Greek Prime Minister stated that “the meeting was held in a warm atmosphere.”

At the top of the agenda was reportedly a discussion about the restoration of the Tatoi royal estate. Tatoi was once the summer palace of the former Greek royal family but has now fallen into disrepair.

The Tatoi estate encompasses 42 square kilometers (20,000 acres) of grounds and is just over 27 kilometers (17 miles) away from the center of Athens. The Prince’s Foundation, founded by King Charles, may be working on the restoration of the royal residence.

The foundation has experience managing Dumfries House, an important 18th-century stately home in Scotland.

The pair may also have discussed environmental issues. Mitsotakis has previously pledged support for a “green agenda” in Greece, which includes phasing out certain fuels deemed to be environmentally damaging. In 2020, Greece was recorded as having the most significant annual drop in carbon emissions.

Similarly, King Charles is known for his views on environmentalism. The king has campaigned for better conservation, organic farming, and climate change initiatives. He also gave the opening speech at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

King Charles’ connections to Greece

King Charles has deep connections to Greece. His late father, Prince Phillip, was a member of the Greek royal family. The prince was born in the villa Mon Repos on Corfu, but he never returned to Greece after his father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, was exiled.

King Charles, however, has visited the birthplace of his father several times. His most recent visit was in March 2021 to mark the bicentenary of the Greek War of Independence. Whilst there, he also toured the grounds of the Tatoi estate.

More recently, in October 2022, the king met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Buckingham Palace. The Patriarch performs an important role in the Greek Orthodox faith and is regarded as the first among equals in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In 2018, King Charles expressed his sentiments toward Greece during a speech in Athens. “We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts have their root in Greece,” the then-Prince of Wales said.

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ visit to the UK

In addition to his reception with King Charles, Mitsotakis has been busy promoting Greek business and economic interests in the UK. It is hoped that this will help Greece’s economy bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday morning, Mitsotakis spoke at the Greek Investment Conference hosted by Morgan Stanley and the Athens Stock Exchange. More than 240 investors were expected to attend the conference, according to the press.

The Greek Prime Minister was also scheduled to take part in a talk marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Hellenic Observatory at the London School of Economics. The talk was chaired by Professor Kevin Featherstone, the director of the Hellenic Observatory.
